RACE REPORT – Mosport – Mosport was a rough weekend for Toad Hall. Peter crashed the car at the end of the back straight on Thursday after the rear suspension failed just as he put on the brakes. The car went off the course at about 150 MPH and was still traveling over 100 when he hit a tire wall after the car skipped sideways through a gravel pit at the end of the straight. This is the fastest spot on the course so it was a bit difficult. The car bounced into the air and came to rest on top of a concrete wall. Needless it was a classic Mr. Toad Wild Ride. The car was damaged significantly and after about 60 hours of non-stop work, the crew had the car ready to go, more or less for qualifying. We had most of the parts, but not all we needed so some critical suspension pieces were replaced with less than correct suspension pieces. We did not qualify well and started the race from the middle of the field. Jim also struggled during practice and qualifying and he elected not to start the race. Peter started 27th and was up to 13th in about 5 laps when the suspension failed again, in the same place…and it was a brand new part that failed. These were not Porsche parts, but rather aftermarket replacements designed to make suspension adjustment easier. Fortunately, the part failed will going about 60 MPH instead of going 160 and Peter was able to get the car back to the pits. The crew changed the piece, putting in another street car piece and with 2 laps lost Peter returned to the track. The car ran ok from that point on although it was not up to speed and the suspension was out of adjustment. But…a lesson learned.
Highlights of the weekend: Peter did not get a bruise or a sore spot in the crash…. Hard to believe, but true. The crew was EXTRAORDINARY. Not a single person in the pits (other than the crew) though we would be able to race on Sunday when they saw the car. Not even Peter. But David Moore and the guys were ready for qualifying on Saturday…. We came out of the weekend with 4 points. More than the amount by which we lost the championship last year, so there is still hope…. We will be competitive next weekend (May 30) in Lime Rock… David has promised that…. We didn’t break either the motor or the transmission in the crash…. The car looks good (but for a few dings) and the crew uniforms are great thanks to Initially Yours in Wayzata, MN who did them. Thanks Roberta…. We are learning each weekend and expect to be on the pace soon if not at Lime Rock. So, go to the Lime Rock page and catch up on our progress there.
