RACE REPORT – Lime Rock, Conn. May 27. We qualified 17th, finished 10th. We did finish in virtually a dead heat for 8th, 9th and 10th. Unfortunately we got beat to the line by the Paul Brown’s Saleen Mustang horsepower. Not a lot to write home about this weekend. Terry Borcheller won the race in another Saleen and Peter Cunningham takes over the lead in the Championship…with a 4th, 5th, and 4th. Bobby Archer was fast again and the Audi’s also proved formidable. Derek Bell spun about mid race, hit the wall and came back into the track…right in front of me. Close call, but we managed to get by. Michael Galati and Bill Cooper got together and Cooper (the guy that intentionally hit us in the race last year) got the worst of the deal. Into the wall and a badly damaged car. He was, however, ok.
The car is now 100% after our crash at Mosport and we still can’t make it work. It is absolutely impossible to get it down to minimum weight and to get the balance on the car to work for racing. We were a full second off the pace although we were within .1 second of the other fast Porsche, David Schardt. The problem with the car is that it is so nervous that you can get it one good lap, but that is sliding it all over the place and then the tires get hot and it can’t go the next lap fast. This year at Lime Rock we were faster than last year, and we are not in contention we were two seconds off the pace. But we are told that the tires are better. With all of the work the guys have put into the car it is very frustrating. So, we are back to the drawing board, trying to figure the thing out. We are concluding that the GT3 Cup car was not really designed to be a good race car and it really needs a lot more development…the kind of development we are not sure we want to go through. So, we might be back to an RSR,….. or out of the series. We will have to make some big decisions in the next couple of weeks.
